News From the Office

Topic: EmotionalPoetry

Lofty resistance greet cancer from lips
trained to impart dire news.
Ears not so trained to receive a sentence
of death
rebel and deny with eyes long after breath
has been expelled.

A stagger from the office with walls coated
in displays, via degrees, why 'Doctor knows best',
“Take the chemo please.”
A round of pills and dripping I.V.'s, hot on heels
on the gurney wheels spin to Radiation
in hopes of killing that within slated
to rob one's life-
“Not me! No chemo, thank you please!
When I die I want to see the sun-
(Why God, do you take my life 'ere begun?)
I will go my own way in my own time”

So Brave! How will I be when MY Time arrives?

It's here. Between golf at two and drinks at four
my Doctor whispered in answer, “Not much more.”
feet now lead, brain shocked to still
the door jam has details not noticed before.
All is large and the world is under a microscope
as I absorb and deny my death in efforts to cope.
