We were lucky, son - we won

Contributed by spud on Thursday, 7th August 2014 @ 06:45:13 AM in AEST
Topic: Tributes

I lay the flowers on your time-worn grave
no pomp no circumstance;
a purple thistle for a Scottish brave
and the fleur-de-lys of France.

You lie - not in those perfect rows
of symmetry and marble white
where other lions of war repose
now ageless in eternal light -
but in a corner snug and green
held soft in Scotia's tender loam,
no epitaph to the horrors seen
to tortured minds who came back home.

The pipes may skirl and the songs enthral
for heroic deeds once done,
but it's words you spoke that I'll recall ....
''We were lucky, son - we won.''

Man, this is absolutely powerful as deeply touching! Beautiful poetry; but no one ever truly wins from 'War' do they ? This is a poetic treasure and we can feel, it's timeless love....

Good on ya, spud.
lovely visuals, and the character of the subject and circumstance really come through. S

I am utterly and absolutely in love with this entire piece. It tells
a story so complete and so vivid, it/'/s impossible not to be affected
by the emotion it breathes.

Tommy, I/'/m so enthralled with your writing and I have so
missed this part of YPDC.

Cheers, my friend. xo
