The day was young, my chores were done
and Daddy's gone to town,
Momma's in back on the laundry line,
ain't no one else around...
That sun was hot, “I need a spot”
where shade is all I feel,
Then the old pond popped to the top
So I grabbed my pole and reel.
I yelled to my Mom, “I'm off to the pond!”
I heard, “You best be back by lunch!”
I almost said “I'm bringin' it home”
'cause today I had a hunch.
You gotta know I lost two poles
to an old catfish in there,
I almost had him once, and when he jumped
He was two foot long I swear.
“Hey fat cat!, Where you at?,
You're comin home with me!”
I looked on the pond, smooth as glass
'n saw him lookin' up at me.
If a fish could smile, I'd walk ten miles
on a road made of thorns,
well, that old cat, he did just that,
I'm darn glad I never sworned.
“Cat we're gonna see, today it's you or me”,
I reached in the dirt for the monster worm
then on the hook with the bobber set,
said “Poor thing, I reckon it's your turn”.
I cast my old bamboo, Pa had said “I bought you two!
We ain't rich, no more fancy poles from us”
So I prayed real hard he'd love that worm
when I felt a mighty tug!
I jerked hard n' set the line, olé fat cat gave me a time,
and then the fight was on..
one us would tucker out, n' give up for sure,
I said “No way if it takes all day, I don't care how long!”
I saw the sun was way past noon, I knew Mom was comin' soon
She'd cut that line and pinch my ear, so I threw in all I had.
And just as my folks came down to the shore
With a mighty yank I pulled fat cat to the feet of Mom and Dad.
Pa, he was sure amazed and Momma looked a little dazed,
I thought my smile might split my face in two
When Pa picked up olé fat cat, “Ten pounds for sure!”
And said, “Son I'm proud of you”.
