Hush! Stop thy ears!
Quite now.....let's slip inside,
you and I
into a silent world.
A jar is dropped on concrete-
we see glass splinter, sharding to and fro,
(watch that foot- watch that toe!)
glass can fly and cut, you see.
But I, you- in this world where
breakage is a distant thing,
we can see, we can feel-
but to hear?
Sound does not sing-
to them.
In cruel reflection we imagine
insomuch as we can
the clanking grating sound-
t'would be music,
simply found- tympani to take a stand.
How cruel! How vexing!
What right have we to tear into the sorrow
of a hundred tomorrows,
not knowing laughter aught by eyes lit
and smiles wide-
no where to run...no safe harbor
where all is well-
the deaf know no such spell (read, relief),
Such is the never ending- may it cease,
this thing we call deafness-
(prithee for them) but for me
I call a living hell.
Pray you can hear me-
listen (not just read) these words I tell.
