I Go To My Wife

In my lofty thoughts, wrought next to Thoreau-
sidled firm near Whitman-
two cigarettes and two shots to get it done,
I sat composed and ready to pen
the next pondering of mine-
not on life, as should be,
but on death-
mine of course,
narcissist, me.
The vision, (already on paper in my mind and looking good)
swam with firm strokes, paddling
to that conclusion upon which I could reflect-
“Well done, lad”- aught
but now but a guess,
as deflection (read, life)
in the form of my wife pulled and pushed,
not on death (or the glorious ode now defeated)
but on life and smiles and dance.
Half resentment curdling as my poem lay in tatters-
never to be restored in the particular flavor
I tasted at the time-
Left on the dance floor as I smiled to my wife-
her smile returned, and the look in her eyes
spoke to life-
I sit here, now, alone in my tower (first floor- tower only by the closed door),
and rue my intractability- (she dances alone)-
my crusty shell needs re-breaking every now and then-
if not now, then when?
I go to my wife.

You're in your poet's cave.
And this: Half resentment curdling as my poem lay in tatters-
never to be restored in the particular flavor
I tasted at the time-
I hate it when that happens!!!! (And I still resent myself for losing a particular one back in '06)
And this poet misses his married life... sometimes
Enjoyed this poem.
Thank you.

Bravo! We all need our "crusty shell" rebroken now and then! Sometimes I get lost in a melody, and my husband interrupts me. Perhaps they miss our company. Or know what we need as well as we.
The song will not return anymore than your poem..but to have someone come to find us…What a gift. Life is messy..and love is infamous for leaving muddy footprints on the carpet!
You are blessed.

It's a lonely business: life in that tower. But it has such magnetism that it cannot be deserted. I'm happy for my 'crusty shell' to be broken......only if the breaker can appreciate the kernel within. You always give yourself completely to your poems, and that's how it should be. Some poems stick around in the mind, long after the reading; this is one such poem. |
