Old Man In Love

Nothing is sadder
Than an old man in love
There is no tomorrow
He can speak of
He tries to go on
In a very simple way
Only to find
God has looked
The other way
Every time he gets up
The face that he sees
Is covered in worry
Because of what he believes
He wants to love
Just one more time
Even if that love is completely blind
He can’t go on
With what he feels
The weight that he bears
Has broken wheels
So he gives to the world
What is in him
And the world
Slams the door
once again
Old Men are still
Made of flesh and bone
Of what God has given
From a place unknown
He has to believe
That love is real
Or he will begin
Not to feel

This is wonderful, bitter, sad, and true.
You have only to sit in a bar to see the lonely ones who were once vital, and now so yearn for a human touch.
You have perfectly described the need for connection, acceptance, and affirmation by another that we are more than an image in a mirror.
Love, like loss, thankfully comes in all sizes. I know he will find his way when you say "He has to believe that love is real". |
