Were They Really Hard Times?

Contributed by withlove_me on Monday, 5th August 2002 @ 01:15:38 PM in AEST
Topic: Lifepoems

An old coal oil lantern, was all the light we had
We never had any better,so it wasn't so bad

An old wood stove, that would heat only one room
The family sat around it hoping,it would be spring soon

I remember getting candy, every now and then
And dad hollering boys get up,IT's 5 AM

Going to milk the cow,in the cool early dawn
Had to get the chores done, breakfast will soon be on

We would have bacon, eggs and butter from cream
A healthier breakfast I have never seen

No high blood pressure,no high cholestorol
We didn't use chemicals or pesticides at all

Take your lunch to school in an old tin pail
Have sausage and biscuit, everday without fail

You walked to school, you didn't take a bus
And in your bare feet, you kicked up thin dust

And when supper was over, and the dishes done
We'd chase fireflys in the dark, man that was fun

Dad would chip off ice, from a big ice block
And make homemade icecream,we liked that alot

With sticky chins and sleepy eyes
We kissed mom and dad and said goodnight

We slept three to a bed,we laughed and played rough
Till dad hollored GOODNIGHT, boys thats enough

We lived through some hard times, but we also had good
And I wouldn't give up these memories, even if I could

I'm way to young to remember the "good ol' days" but I've heard my grandparents tell tales... and I've got memories of those stories. This was a beautiful poem, I'm glad that you have those memories and that you can share them with all of us. Great write!
