Tom Foley was a hero of mine-
I knew him but a quite short time.
A nurses aide I was, (ass-wiper, true),
But Tom Foley, proud I was I knew.
Old as dirt, he seemed to me-
Thin, gaunt- hard for him to see,
But wit, Oh my, how he had it,
Old Tom, he didn't take no-
Split I was, 'tween job and him,
Tom Foley how he won me in;
His smile gone these thirty years,
I recall too deep, I let loose tears.
He told me how he had a spread,
five hundred acres with his family led,
then one day they decided thus;
He was to old, that's what they said.
He had a driveway half a mile long,
When winter turned it white from black,
Tom went out and shovelled strong;
He eighty, me twenty, his the stronger back.
As tears slipped unbidden drawn
his cheeks moist in December's dawn,
he told me how they came one day
with lawyer's papers and packed him away.
His heart and will, they made him strong,
he'd of lived another twenty years,
instead they dumped Tom in the old folks home
and he died quite quick, to my sorrowed tears.

What a poignant vivid honor to a life well lived - I too, know how families can throw away the "old" in difference to the "new". Sad, yes, the story you tell - but oh, the honor and strength you give to this person. Very great write, P |

Well- written, and memorable poem. It's a sad reflection on our society: the way we treat our elderly. At least Old Tom had you, and wasn't abused, or assaulted. Too many stories of such these days. |
