The measure of Love

Contributed by spud on Wednesday, 25th June 2014 @ 08:54:55 AM in AEST
Topic: LovePoetry

Watching them, side by side,
seated in the corner of the function hall
comfortably positioned - and farthest
from the deafening volcanic eruptions
of Heavy Metal.
It's their grandson's wedding soiree
and he looks so much like his grandfather
when he pledged his troth,
though fashions have changed
and the music's louder.

Then relief, as older and more
familiar strains fill the hall.
He touches her hand
and she touches his shoulder
to brush some down from his jacket
as they move towards the dance floor.
But the respite is brief
when heavy metal resumes.

Unpretentious in their smiles
as they survey the young;
the neatly dressed and the nearly dressed,
ululating and undulating
in rhythm with the music;
sharing the meaning of the lyrics
which only youth can discern.
So young, so beautiful, so talkative,
so many joys to experience,
so unaware of trials to come,
disappointments, worries.
Then they will know Love,
when a touch is enough.

I admit, this gave me chills. It's a sweet, honest, and down to earth story of love; and the never-ending of love. Very very very nice write - thank you for the smile today, P

I was about to send out a search party! When the last line has the combined power of all the rest of the lines then is felt the power of the pen and the strength of the heart behind the words x

Spudly, it's sweet, alright, and the sentimental aspect is lightly brushed over a fairly typical coming of age celebration - but that's not what makes it such a good read. It is that blend of wisdom through experience, bonds forged and tested in life's crucibles, and generational transference of the torch, so to speak (all personified in your couple). At the callow points in our youth and life we think its all new and self-centred, whle the signs that it isn't either are all around us, even at weddings! Nice one. S.

Like watching a film of the words. A most splendid and touching read, laced with respect and understanding. Traits achieved with life's experiences. And my vocabulary is expanded: 'ululating'. Thank you.
