they say she walked into the sea,
drowned there, almost casually
a mother of two, grandmother to be,
who cast her death onto the sea.
a handful knew about her life,
a broken mother, widowed wife
a husband murdered, callously,
the only closure, in the sea.
she kept a vigil, close to ground,
until his last remains were found
from refuse tip to the grave,
her lonely watch, among the brave.
her daughters followed suit as well,
a decade on from their own hell
survivor guilt leaves just a shell,
and lonely tolling’s of the bell.
violence murdered the family:
the victim, it is plain to see
not the only casualty,
that forces grief into the sea.

S,
This is one heart-breaking and terribly sad story
about the Niedermeyer family. I remember when
it happened, but was never aware of the
resultant suicides. Thomas Niedermeyer was
obviously the foundation upon which his family
built their love and meaningfulness. No cause,
however noble and righteous, wins itself
credence or sympathy through its casual
assassination of the innocent. Your poem
conveys a respectful understanding of the
suffering of the Niedermeyer family.
God rest them all.
S
