He was a boy with a gentle side;
A trait that his father chose to deride;
Saw caring as weakness;
Compassion as meekness.
But when his room darkened;
His heart would be harkened;
When none lit the gloom;
but the toys in his room.
He stared at the ceiling;
Weighed words against feeling;
Here he was free;
In beloved fantasy;
Absent of lies;
And shy alibies.
He spoke through his dolls;
Cheered on by his toys;
Who cared not that he;
was the gentlest of boys.
He had conversations;
and played all the parts;
villians and hero/'/s;
And wisecracking tarts!
He made others laugh;
His door to salvation!
Saved by his toys
from dad’s degradation.
Embraced by his puppets;
His critics at bay;
From city to city;
They made their own way,
His puppets inspired the courage it takes;
to live without answers to all his mistakes;
Being a misfit is not easy stuff;
And he doubted his choices often enough.
The child in his heart was often mistaken;
(lack of compassion saw many forsaken!)
But we can’t all be lions;
We’re not meant to be;
A truth that his father was too late to see.
He imagines his dad can look down on the joys;
of the life his son made in the presence of toys!
He didn’t grow up; And he couldn’t give in;
And yes, he would certainly do it again!
Since finding his voice in those dark bedroom walls;
His puppets have echoed in fine concert halls;
‘Cause out on the stage; talking together;
he in a tux; and his dolls all in feathers..
The fantasy lives; and make-believe falls;
on the sound of laughter and standing applause;
Bathed in the spotlight he takes curtain calls:
A gentle man loved for playing with dolls.

I really really like this. So wonderfully pleasant with a mixture of sadness considering the outlooks of his father.
I was envisioning him growing up to be a ventriloquist.
Very nice indeed.
Thank you. |

What a far-out piece! How cool! One might imagine this boy's life turning out completely different were it not for his father's derision.
My take-away is that the father, (mean spirited, uncouth, callous pric& that he is/was) actually did the boy a favour.
A thorn to prick a finger may cause pain, but also reveals the lushness and unequalled vibrancy of blood- a colour to admire in its non-replicable richness. that, my friend, is just a long and clumsy way of saying that there is a silver lining in almost all things.
Enjoyed the read, softerwear. You've been kind and generous in your comments on my contributions; I've been remiss in returning the favour. Not so from this moment..I'll be reading your contributions to the poetic collective.
Blessings, Invierno |

At first, I thought this was going to be a tragedy...the mild child brutalized by the father's lack of understanding. But I was taking on a wonderfully, fantastic voyage. Cudos! On par with the movie, The Red Balloon!!!
Thank you ever so much for sharing! |

Lovely piece of work, dear poet! Vivid imagery to match a heartwarming tale of someone overcoming obstacles. I never get tired of hearing about people's ability to persevere.
