if you pause
to listen carefully
you can hear the silence in my house
fan blades whirl above
to ease the buttery warmth
of summer days gone wild
as ribbons of sunlight
stream in through glass
past trees beyond
in a world away
to play upon the polished floors
of golden oak
where footfalls of parties past
laughter and words whispered by candlelight
somehow linger in the absolute stillness
the rooms lie dormant
like me
in their patient wait
for human touch
silence assured
by wall-to-wall books meant to be read
and cushioned by a mind
where memories
echo on
soundlessly

This is beautiful Patricia...silence can reveal so many things to us especially if we take the time to really listen...

I 've been looking forward to reading more of your poetry Patricia and this is worth the wait...it has the same serene quality that is in all your work...I love it.

Many people crave solitude. Yet when they get it find they focus more on what before filled the space of it then the sheer, uninterrupted beauty of being alone. One could take sorrow or serenity from this piece, depending on how one feels when reading it. I like that. Kind of like a mood ring poem. This one, image by image, word by word, crept up on me, leaving me with such sadness. I think it's because I first read it on your website. That blue picture of an empty room really is perfect for this poem. |
