The Circling Shark

anguished

The panic of life, shielded as it is
swims always just below our skin;
a shark, murky but unmistakable,
fear slicing as a dorsal fin.
Smiles brighten, eyes alighted;
one would never know,
but always swimming, always circling,
this fear gliding just below.
How do we do it? Compensate?
So much strength does it take,
knowing life is short, our stay so brief,
Our smiles hide this mighty grief.
Knowing that my son will die
Is worse than death itself for I
Would my wishes come to be
I have but one- my son to know eternity.
But there is no winning- no card to trump
inescapable, this awful lump-
This conundrum twined of life and death
unanswered 'ere our final breath.

This is a beautiful write. The ways you've found to word this- it's just lovely. It gives the reader a reason to feel. Something poetry is meant to do.
Well done.
