After dealing with depression for half of my life,
It almost finally took me that near fateful night.
For the first time I was ready to end it all,
The worst it had ever gotten, I had hit the wall.
On the kitchen floor thinking back on my past,
In the fetal position crying, how long will this last?
The pain too much to bear I can't take it anymore!
Then I thought to myself Isn't that what alcohol is for?
But that made it worse the depression got deeper,
All hope had been lost I could feel the grim reaper.
I sat in the darkness dreaming of the end,
With alcohol and pills handy I just needed a friend.
For someone to help me, for someone to care,
But like most of my life no one was there.
With a note written out I couldn't help but wonder,
If anyone would care when I'm six feet under.
Begging for mercy making one final prayer,
I tried one last person I was gasping for air.
And at my darkest hour came a shining light,
They answered my call and saved my life.
"Everything is going to be fine!" "Are you OK?"
I now felt like living, to see another day.
Talking for hours my thoughts started ceasing,
My life changed that night it now had new meaning.
They stopped me that night and I'll be forever grateful,
I love them more than anything now, it didn't turn out fateful.
Depression is deadly and strikes without mention,
If you know someone that has it please pay attention.
You may be confused and not really understand,
But that doesn't matter just give them your hand.
Show them you care and you may save their life,
They just might be having their near fateful night.

Wow, this is so true for a lot of folks. Thanks for sharing this personal account. I've seen people transfixed by some real fear, and no one took notice, just thought they were nuts. I've seen gifted people who are manic go into complete depression where they can't even get out of bed.
People will often think, this person isn't really depressed, like you know, we all get depressed, so just get over it. But the fact of the matter is it can really railroad someone to a point they feel as though there's no where to turn. What happens when you work hard and struggle and accomplish something and then find out that the economy no longer needs someone with your type of expertise... you might easily blame yourself, as if you wasted all that time and training.
I think your writing points this out at least to me. Sometimes seeing someone else in a worse situation than you helps, especially if you can help them in some way.
Thanks!.

Wow! Powerful. Especially the last stanza. Heartfelt and raw. Keep at the writing. It's cathartic and you have a talent. Develop it. Well done. |
