I never was a drug addict.
I never used drugs.
I only took drugs once
on New Year's Eve.
Once on my birthday
I took some drugs.
I only used drugs
after the car accident.
I was once in a car accident
while on drugs.
I only used drugs
when I needed them.
When my wife left me.
When my children left me.
I lost my job.
(It had nothing to do with drugs)
I am not a drug addict.

I only view the poet sympathetically
As he is a sure addict for those drugs
He has lost his peace, wife and kids
God alone must rescue him kindly
The poet has very gently indicated
His addiction for drugs clearly
A good poem that teaches all
To be damn careful in this matter
As any addiction is dangerous
Beyond the limit even nectar
May turn into sure poison.

Yes, denial is not just a river in Egypt. Next comes minimisation, compensation, then normalisation, then a slow boat back down denial. A good first person narrative of the defences needed to justify an addiction.

This is very well done. A somber and all too realistic take on the mind of an addict. Many suffer as a result, but none more than the addict his/herself. The denial required to continue on such an unhealthy path is endless. The pain- unbearable. There is hope. There is help. Find the support system to help you through this dark time.
Thank you for posting this and sharing your experience.

Very effective. A dozen pages would not make the point any clearer. Denial is the food to feed the beast. Short but impressive poem. |
