Raven and Wolf

Contributed by StevenL on Sunday, 19th January 2014 @ 11:44:36 PM in AEST
Topic: StoryPoetry

Gliding and wheeling on shimmering wings of black
the raven soars over the town beneath him
Below the Wolf treads the snow covered streets
and leaves not a trace

Windows slam shut and doors barred
Fear grips the townspeople when the raven flies
The raven's strangled cry mocks their terror
and the wolf treads the snow covered streets and leaves not a trace

Fireplaces spew smoke and embers
to keep away the dark winged denizen above
Through door and gates the wolf treads unhindered
and leaves not a trace

Screams from house and hovel rise in the night
as the newly dead are discovered
The screams of the dying make not a sound
The wolf moves through town and farm and leaves not a trace

On the castle sentry walls archers and spearmen
scan the night sky in vain for the dark winged omen
Spears and arrows fly in to the night sky and find no target
and the wolf treads the snow covered streets and leaves not a trace

Through the night the cries of grief and shock
tear at the soldiers hearts
the raven screams his strangled cry all through the night
the wolf neither hears nor cares and leaves no trace

Whom ever the wolf's passing touches
the cold hand of death is near
the raven wheels and glides and dives in the night
and the wolf leaves no trace

Dawn is rising and the fear eases as the sun rises
the raven soars into the night past
the dead know of the wolf's passing
and like him leave no trace

And the raven's strangled cry is a laugh.
