Jerusalem's Wide Gates

Stephanus Marcus Book 2

Canto 8

Verses 4 and 5

Before the gates of wide Jerusalem
the English pennants flew in wafting breeze.
The Leopard gold of Playston showed again,
just waiting time the Moslem place to seize.
But Frederick drowned, Philip claimed malaise,
all knights of these realms parted home for need.
Alone, King Richard couldn’t gain with ease,
assaulting high walls seemed thing he must cede.
With Saladin at gates it deemed a foolish deed.

With paucity of knights, King Richard made
Jerusalem’s bad siege end lief one day.
Withdrawing gave but little trouble, laid
to prior scheme before crusade left fray.
Ranks filed morosely slow toward Acre’s quay.
At Acre battle waged with Saladin.
Won, sailed to Messina then Marseille.
King Richard gave respects to Philip’s men,
and made appearance grave to Frankish Monarch then.
