Winter's Lament

Contributed by puppy_dog_eyes on Friday, 15th November 2013 @ 02:49:29 PM in AEST
Topic: NaturePoetry

The White Lady is approaching, cold, arrogant and disdainful
Flicking her coat tails across the helpless landscape
Numbing breath ices the air, sedates the still beating Autumn heart
She whispers to the North Wind, commands him to her bidding
His compliant form tempered between daggered fingers
Then thrust to earth a spinning ball of vengeant fury.
Nature chokes, strangled in the grip of the serpent
Once bright canvas misted over by white cladding
Uniformity pervades, disinfecting colour and life.
The boisterous child of Spring hides behind the shutters
Cowers in the low light waiting for tomorrow.
For the long nights we are tombed, slaves in her presence
Captives to her decadence and nonchalant disregard
Sweet birdsong stolen, nothing decks the ragged trees.
The ballad of Summer has long since passed
Now the sound in our ears echo's Winter's lament

a very visual personification of the season, and it reads like a chapter of a cyclic tale, or a prelude in a four act play. The scene is set, the characters in place, and she arrives, terrible and beautiful, to hold centre stage. Nicely done.

I like Winter so, I'm sorry it has misgivings, the fact that winter itself laments is news to me,
probably like an evergreen, minty fresh cough drop, stuck in the back of your throat would lament or would be quickly swallowed by sheer reflex, down to become only a pellet. Birds fly south, ones that stay, well they know it's not winter's lament, why just yesterday I was speaking to a swallow, he was facing the other direction, and without turning his body, his neck turned around and did almost a complete 180, hoo you talking to, you talking to me he hooted...
If winter was the crotchety type, it would hype the fact that it isn't nearly long enough, why hell summer's longer, then there's spring and then the god darn fall...
But I like this poem anyway!
Thanks dude!

Wow beautifully descriptive, detailed and a great embodiment of Lady winter. The finish is just brilliant.

The ballad of Summer has long since passed
Now the sound in our ears echo's Winter's lament

I liked this line also:

Uniformity pervades, disinfecting colour and life.

Great write.

I am sitting here in 30 degree celcius temperature thinking this sounds blissful right now although when Winter does come,
I wont be so impressed.

I love the lilting phrases and can see in my minds eye the white lady of winter.

Brilliant as always .

Love from NZ
