At 24 you write of dreams and aspirations ....at 64 reality sets in!!
Seems this time I need some rhyme, a reason to go on.
never to look back again..... just looking to beyond
What's lost is gone and there shall be, forever from my mind.
never looking, ever seeking... this place I've yet to find.
For now I think I'll close my eyes, forever on to wonder
what will it be? what will I see? to turn that long last corner?
It's not what I, ago foresaw.... horizons yet to find
lost to me .... forever gone, my eyes, they were so blind.
If I could stop at that first turn, a million miles ago,
never see what's yet to be, another way to show.
I've now to cross this place we call "field of past regrets"
to those I found, and those I lost and those I've never met.
So hold my hand just one more time and kindly call me friend,
The journey has been oh so long, a breast to lay my head.
your hand across my weary brow, to ease my troubled mind
forget you hear one long lost tear, that fell from looking hind.
Caress so soft across my face and bid me to go on
just one more mile or one more smile my day is almost done.
Thru choices made and chances gone and bridges that I've burned,
I cannot see what's yet to be.... last corner yet to turn.

Heading my way a decade or so before you,
there's so many things never said, never did, never resurrected. Life's too short at one time or another, too long too I use to think more than once.
Your poem is good and I thank you for it. We learn we hope from those who are our elders. Remember that, for what's worth --- song by Steven Stills?
I just heard this song by John Prine, so I copied it down because your poem touches on its sentiment a bit/ lyrics below:
Today I walked down the street I use to wander
Yeah, shook my head and made myself a bet
There was all these things that I don't think I remember
Hey, How lucky can one man get.
I bronzed my shoes and hung from a rearview mirror
Bronzed admiration in the blind spot of regret
There was all these things that I don't think I remember
Hey, How lucky can one man get.
Today I walked down the street I use to wander
Yeah, scratched my head and lit my cigarette
Well, There was all these things that I don't think I remember
Hey, How lucky can one man get.
Today I walked down the street I use to wander
Yeah, shook my head and made myself a bet
There was all these things that I don't think I remember
Hey, How lucky can one man get.
Hey, How lucky can one man get.
Hey, How lucky can
One...
Man...
Get.
Thanks! P.S. I hope there's more than you might think still ahead and that it's better than you thought.
Peace! |

It seems with the last two stanzas (except the last line) you're writing of dreams and aspirations come true because someone is there to help you through. Just the way that struck me.
I'm sixty and still hopeful, but yes, much different than when I was twenty.
Definitely an interesting read.
Thank you,
Tim

What a fantastic write, written in the present in some stanza's and reflecting back to what once was. How long the journey can be without someone special by your side... honestly I'm 47 and some days I feel older than you only through injuries and hard yakka, but seriously apart from the pain I am in most days, I wouldn't change the hard yakka for an easy job any day. |
