What if you knew?
That the baby that screamed in its gasp for life as it
Emerged from your body was going to take another’s life.
What if you knew that the infant that suckled your breast in its search
For sustenance was going to grow up to abuse.
What if you knew that the child that hugged you and gave love as you
Loved them would grow up to seek perverted love.
What if you knew that the older child you see growing in height and strength
Would use that height and strength to pick on the vulnerable.
What if you knew that the teenager who you patiently taught lessons
In life was going to reward you by taking your life.
What if you knew that the young adult that you had nurtured into independence
Would rob you like a stranger, then rob a stranger to pay for their fix.
What if you knew that the child you had planned to show to the world in pictures
And pride, was pictured across the world in words of hatred for crimes against
Humanity.
What if you knew?

Very very complex questions. What if we did know ahead of time? I know sometimes I'll find my self saying this about my daughter, "I didn't teach her that". But the thing is I didn't know years ago how she'd turn out. I am not at all saying she turned out bad. Quite the contrary, she turned out to be an awesome human being and I hope that I at least played some part in that.
I think for the most part, that we are products of our environment. So if I was the one knowing about the person, one of the examples given in your awesome poem, then I probably wouldn't care much because that's how I brought that individual up anyway. But then again, I could be totally wrong. I know, I myself, would be totally disappointed and embarrassed knowing my child was pictured across the world in words of hatred for crimes against humanity. |
