God bless America

Contributed by Helenesovig on Thursday, 23rd May 2013 @ 04:17:33 AM in AEST
Topic: political

I am not American,
I should shut my mouth,
But I have an opinion,
Of that I'm proud,
I saw the family’s starving, living in the streets,
Thinking to myself, is that the American dream?
When Hilton and Kardashian works for not 1 day,
And a mother with three kids she works 24/7,
is that the American way?
Well I guess I feel lucky,
I guess I feel blessed,
That I am not from the “free” and “equal” west,
Well you can say that I am crazy,
Say I'm insane,
I just guess I feel lucky, that I was born a Dane.

and me an Aussie!

Yes, it's brave to write about the US from the outside.

I've visited the States a few times now, and differentials of resources, entitlements, rights and privileges is widespread. I've concluded that such differences rise from a complex brew of religion, morality, economics, self interest, and a genuine sense that anyone can make it - the American Dream - if you work at it hard enough and long enough. Suffering and success are seen as a consequence of individual behaviour, not collectivism, and while the country is 'United' it is State-based at its heart. Suffering and inequality is accepted, even by those suffering, because of a deeply ingrained commitment to individualism, and a vague hope that even from a position of down and out, they may rise to cusp that Dream.

S. (looking forward to his next trip there)
