anguished

If I had the money
and time didn’t matter
I would go back
and fix what didn’t
need to be broken
the bills left unpaid
how the night is cold
in the winter
your breath
is a fading ghost
against the dim streetlights
of your mother’s eyes
the smell of your
perfume becoming
diesel exhaust
I avert my gaze
pretend not to notice
we were only sixteen
with the world sitting
on the side of the wet highway
we could capture the dreams
up above in the starry sky
you have climbed up the
rattling chain link fence
into the Cadillac graveyard
where old dreams rust away
and beautiful things
become forgotten
