Shade of a dream

Submissive songs of tranquil sadness haunt my dreams,
escape is futile in the never-ending sorrow of the mind,
wave upon wave washes upon me, but never erodes my nature,
I can feel the tiny grains of sand being washed from beneath my feet,
... and yet here I stand,
wishing for the next kind whisper... the next catch of phrase,
sitting in solitude and loving the sound of the wind,
watching the leaves caught in the breeze... a fitting analogy for life,
and I drink it all in... like a man who has never tasted sorrow before,
I would drink forever... were it permitted, to fade from memory and reason,
to age into invisibility... unknown and forgotten... I would still walk,
head in the clouds... letting the world pass around me in contemplation,
until Gaia herself crumbled into dust and nothing but a memory remained,
would that eternity were for man... and I could fulfill all my dreams,
but winter comes... and even the trees lose their leaves... to blow in the wind.
