The Challange of the 'Slot'

Contributed by norm on Tuesday, 13th May 2003 @ 06:35:00 PM in AEST
Topic: HumorPoetry

At a point seven miles from Sandy Hook Bay
The Shrewsbury and the Navasink meet,
From the Shrewsbury River
starts the Navasink River
heading south for 'bout five thousand feet.

The Navasink's average is twenty feet wide
deep enough for a megayacht,
At all times it's chancy,
and weedy..not fancy
and is lovingly entitled, 'The Slot'.

Brookes climbed up Everest, Lindbergh to Paris,
People extoled, like as not,
but neither do rate
a thing that's as great,
as taking a sloop down the 'Slot'.

I started one day, I refused to delay,
I filled my gas tank to the top,
No intention to dicker
with my two horse kicker
It's there if my sloop slips in slop.

Well, fast off I went. You might say, t'was hell-bent
with my sloop running south at apace,
a duck passing by
kind of gave me the eye
which told me he wanted to race.

It was bow and bill, we were close, yes, until
We rounded a bend in the 'Slot',
The wind went to front
I figured I'd punt,
And the duck stold a lead like a shot.

What was really a blow, the ducklings in tow
Made me want to let sloop sink or rot.
No. I didn't win
with shame and chagrin
The ducklings beat sloop to the spot,

As it now appears, my sloop's in arrears
buy!..if you think you're so hot,
For me..no more vying
For me..no more trying
to best the taunt of the 'Slot'.
