I am AFK..........BRB!!!

Contributed by puppy_dog_eyes on Friday, 8th February 2013 @ 07:30:02 PM in AEST
Topic: Lifepoems

Lol, what a world we now live in, coated in abbreviation
Ruled by fragmented, malformed English, de-constructed sentences
Alphabetic abundance strangled and corrupted into compact form
Uneccessary letters squeezed out by the cuckoo of contaminated communication
Stunted words as throwaway as the headlines in yesterdays newspaper
Would Shakespeare have toiled so hard with mobile phoned mindset?
2b or not 2b perhaps, wherefore art thou Romeo, txt me, c u l8tr
This hurried world demands expedition of our expression, language languishes in the gutter
Those who subscribe to the code, evaporate the traditional in their evolution
While the old guard battle against the inevitable unchecked rise of the touch-pad generation
What was once the interloper has become technology shaped usurper
Minimal revered by the 2 fingered tappers that dwell in www.coffeeshop
I should ponder more on this linguistic stuff, but for now I am afk.....brb.

Love it. Thank you for posting.

Even though I have been guilty of such, I, myself, do not like the text message abbreviations!

Guess I'm old school :)

Thank you for an enjoyable read.

About time someone had a go at ott contractions, substituting numbers 4 letters and emoticons for real expression! It's a new language alright, and there is a lot of dumbing down in speech and text but its all go-go-GO! in the new world order - practical over poetical, and all. I had a good chuckle at the Shakespeare line, but I think he might have dug the reshaping of language, having invented over 2,000 new words himself. But it's not all new; Stephen Fry of QI reckons OMG was first used in the 1600s, and for the first and only time that it wasn't redundant, was followed by (Oh My God), by way of explanation. Nothing new under the sun, just a new model, see.

Hi,

I take in all that you've underlined here, and
I must admit that I agree with you entirely.
Though, by way of further admission,
I occasionally transgress - just to remind
myself that I'm mortally attached to changes
during the latter half of 20th century and the
21st so far. And to think I can still be
hypocritical enough to castigate my sons
on their 'word' choices.

Guilty, your honour - but thank you for your
gentle reproof.

A great piece of reading - much enjoyed.
