The soap in the soapdish is solid and white;
The place is too silent; why is is not right?
No gum in the ashtray; no toys in my tub.
Witness the lioness missing her cub.
Somewhere the tube blares Sesame Street:
The doorjambs are black;
The dogs dare not sleep!
Somewhere he lies amid boyish treasures,
Dreaming he's fearless in undaunted measures!
Amazing to see the reverse of the shoe;
He goes on without you; so who needed who?
Children are strong! Children survive!
(Grown-up make up things to keep them alive.)
Memories, rituals, photos, and songs;
Frozen in time, while time goes on.
I want to tell you I love you tonight;
Wherever you are my heart holds you tight.
Too wise for a cub; too young for a lion;
Too much to tell you; too late for the trying.

You know, to experience such a terrible trial and then to have the courage to put it out there for the world to see takes not only great strength, but incredible character. Then to write it out in perfect rhyme and rhythm? Unbelievable!
