The Jacket

The Jacket

Warm little jacket; mom's hand me down;
So many patches to keep you around.
Once you were brilliant; when we were new;
And oh how the world has had fun with you!

The places we'e been to, the things that we've seen;
The cold we kept warm through has kept our soul lean.
Whenever a seam burst we patched it with tears;
and lovingly covered the signs of the years.

I can't recall the hour or the day;
when I folded you up and tucked you away.
but the donation truck is waiting outside;
Filling with hopes that won't be denied.

Inside this drawer sits a faded old jacket;
whose memories come flooding as I try to pack it.
Don't know why I've saved it; my children are grown!
Yet inside this drawer lies the life I have known.

Neither of us has a glimmer of passion; we're so long ago; and both out of fashion!
Replaced by synthetics and faux fur and such; not a memory among them that means very much!

But they never held the scent of her hair; watched her eyes smile; drank up her tear;
Or covered her sleeping; or made her a cape; or tied up her treasures and helped her escape!
They didn't embalm her in calamine lotion;
Or warm her by fires while she dried off the ocean;
Nor walked me back home on her first day of school;
Or danced at the end of her kite like a fool!

Your colors are faded;
Your edges are frayed;
and you're welcome to stay till the end of my days.

I trust that you'll be here when it's time to go;
And I'll have to leave you to do what you know.

Just call to her softly as you did to me;
Remind her to trust in all she will be;

And teach her to gather before you depart;
sweet memories to dwell in the drawer of her heart.

This is excellent! Kinda felt sorry for the new faux jackets in their unremarkable life, but alas, such is life.

This was magnificent.
I too seem to see the lives in inanimate objects and find it hard to part with old friends. I really enjoyed this wonderful poem. You excel at excellence.

James
