She was falling.
She was falling,
And he was looking for something to hold onto.
For he had made his world flat:
No up, no down, no highs, no lows.
He found safety in knowing
That the moon
And rock bottom
Were both out of reach.
So when she chanced
Upon his outstretched fingers,
Her world grew still,
And his,
Came to life.
They did not know
Whose hands they had found,
Only the warmth of another
Who had also been burned.
(For where there is hardship,
The hands remember.)
And for that moment,
The world fell away,
Releasing its hold
On two so strongly drawn
Away from this life.
But she was shooting
For the stars,
And he was heading down to Earth,
And as her fingers
Slipped through his,
He reached, reached, reached, until
He was falling.
And he watched her fall into the sky.
