United Flight 5886 ORD to RAP

Contributed by mchall629 on Saturday, 1st December 2012 @ 10:16:35 PM in AEST
Topic: oops

Awaken mid flight being tossed about the cabin,
Thought it was a dream or something I imagined.
I can feel their fear and hear their cries
Today could be our last here in the Dakota skies.

It's the roughest flight I've had in all my years
Yet through it all, I really have no fear.
I do wonder if it's the last day I have left
Just how many for me will have wept.

If I should perish here in one of these fields
Would true feelings for me finally be revealed.
How many would actually visit my casket
Who would show up and who would be absent.

I see a mother and daughter saying a silent prayer
Over my shoulder another couple completely unaware.
Descending through the clouds with a violent shake
Closing my eyes for a mental inventory I must take.

My will and insurance are all in order
But did I give a big enough tip to the porter?
To my daughters, what were the last words spoke
Was it in love, anger, or a meaningless joke.

Have I done enough that they remember the good in me
Or will it be the worst in me that they see.
Have I really taught them right from wrong
More importantly have I taught them how to be strong.

Who will be the one to call on my friends
Or explain to those I never made amends.
I hope I have touched some hearts here and there
Because in the end you're never really prepared.

I see images of friends and family run through my head
So many things left to do, so many things left unsaid.
A deep breath, eyes closed, so my mind is clear
Free of pain, free of turmoil, free of anguish or fear.

Come to terms with what will be my final resting place
When I see an unexpected image of her smiling face.
Even in this moment she continues to bring me joy
I regret not calling to say hi from Chicago, Illinois.

I think she understands exactly my feelings
How my affections for her have no ceiling.
I hope she has saved me a place inside her heart
And she knows I wished to finish what we started.

The tree tops are close, we're almost at the end
As I realize I see where the runway now begins.
One final shake and the landing gear comes down
In 3,2,1 we have arrived safely on the ground.

First thing I do is contact the people that mean the most
I get to tell them hello instead of the big adios.
I go down the list and give each one a call
Aside from my girls, her voice means more than them all.
