I wandered far, I wandered wide,
Straight on, across, athwart
Day in, day out, morning and night
Great sadness in my heart.
I felt so faint, my feet were weak,
From wandering overland,
When by an ash-tree near a creek
A wooden cross I found.
Bloodstained thereon my Savior hung
Head lowered, forward bent,
His arms stretched out, so full of love
But no flowers nor ornament.
Beneath His feet I took my rest
And there I found sweet peace,
There I laid down what so oppressed,
how good our Savior is!
Above is my translation to my mother's original below.
Gewandert bin ich weit und lang
Viel Wege kreuz und quer
Tagaus, tagein, und naechtelang
Verflossen trueb und schwer.
Ich war so matt vom vielen Gehen,
Es trug mein Fuss mich kaum,
1/18/04a sah ein hoelzern Kreuz ich stehn
Bei einem Lindenbaum
Daran der Heiland, blutbefleckt,
Herabgesenkt das Haupt
Die Arme liebend ausgestreckt,
Und jeder Zier be raubt.
Zu seinen Fuessen hielt ich rast,
Da fand ich suesse Rueh
Hier legt ich nieder meine Last,
Oh Herr! wie gut bist Du!
