My Hero

Contributed by mchall629 on Tuesday, 20th November 2012 @ 11:05:53 PM in AEST
Topic: Tributes

When I was younger I remember the look in his eyes,
Strong and fearless, they could see through any lie.
He came across cold and mean,
He never said it, but I knew he loved me.

His hands were weathered and rough,
He was raised when times were really tough.
He knew what it meant to be poor,
A small little house with only a dirt floor.

He didn’t believe in extravagant things,
Fancy cars or big diamond rings.
He lived life always planning for tomorrow,
Not much emotion, not showing any sorrow.

Over the years his wisdom shown through,
Passing his knowledge to me and you.
I wish I had listened to what he had to say,
For I might be a better man today.

While he wasn’t a rich or famous man,
I was happy to be his biggest fan.
He taught me more than I realized about life,
How to handle pressures, struggle and strife.

I don’t think I ever saw him show fear,
Not breaking down or shedding a tear.
Till his last days he managed to stay strong,
Wanting us to carry on long after he was gone.

What I wouldn’t give for more time,
To tell him I love him, and I’ll be fine.
That he always meant the world to me,
That he was the foundation of our family.

I remember watching as he took his last breath,
How it’s impossible to cheat death.
It’s a feeling I will never forget,
I remember feeling confused and upset.

I remember as we covered him with dirt,
I tried to hold back, but the feelings I couldn’t revert.
I heard the sobs and cries from everyone else,
I tried to be strong for everyone, including myself.

I take solace knowing your somewhere better,
I hope you know you’ll be with us forever.
In things you taught and shown,
Everywhere I look, in my heart and in my home.

You’ll be in our hearts forever and a day,
We will meet again this I pray.
So until my days count down to zero,
Know your not just my paw-paw, you’re my hero

Absolutely loved this poem . Although very sad it made me remember how precious life is and family is the foundation of all.
