Towards leaning tower blocks
and wailing car alarms
towards gas leaks, towards pot holes
Where a dirty atmosphere lingers
with intent on snarling streets
and in the anguished retreats.
unknown places visited in shame
and used alone...
Malevolence bitter in the air
malevolence seeping,
from the convoluted souls of dissolute youth
Yet, behind the hoods and wild eyes
at the source of anger a terrible truth lies.
Poverty, disfigures and contaminates people
Architects of their own failures?
Prisoners of their own backgrounds?
A young women's sallow face
looks greased and sickly
in the harsh sunlight
her most spiteful act
was a terrible accident
she pushes it around in a pram
Poverty disfigures and contaminates people
Even the smell of stale beer
won't stir old Alf now
or the wet patch on his pillow.
He died in a rented room.
Phelgmatic paramedics
interfere with the corpse
and report their findings
they find no charm in the
gravy stains on his shirt
or in the crusty fiver
down his pants
Sly eyes slide over
the unreadable pages of my life
and snort at it's conclusion
the dregs of past pleasure can do nothing
but linger with scent of perfume in a disused stairwell
the last drags of youth still clinging feebly to a false hope
but I guess I can't do anythingwith a mind ruined by monotony
that can do nothing but scream through these quotidian days

Languid. One of those words where I love the word but am not attracted to the concept. The poem was full of images from an inspiration, obviously. The images kept slinking through my brain while reading. Nice work! |
