My childhood memories, now long in the past
when days were endless and time never went fast
A young girl then with long hair of gold
never did I dream that one day I'd grow old
We could play in the veld on a hot summer’s day
when rain was scarce then we all had to pray
We caught many tadpoles down at the spruit
our parents didn't worry when we got home too late
Our boats in the gutter after the rain
bobbing slowly towards the flooding drain
Walking from school in the fierce summer heat
never complaining of the blisters on our feet
When dogs could run in the street so free
and neighbours invited each other to tea
Our doctor would visit when I was sick
out of his big bag, red medicine he would pick
Riding our bikes till we were red in the face
pretty Sunday frocks of cotton and lace
Brown leather school shoes, all shiny and new
a new school case to last more than a year or two
Playing hopscotch in the middle of our street
only having wholesome and healthy foods to eat
At the grocer and butcher we’d stand in the queue
no self service, but an assistant to help you
The days when you did as you were told
and children had respect for the old
On Saturday I'd shop with mom, hand in hand
so distant now, like a far off land
Young eyes bright and oh so green
what did the future hold, for me it was unseen
My mom and brother were all that I had
he left when I was 5, the man we called dad
So mom worked hard to makes ends meet
rarely a spare cent to give us a treat
But life was more simple and we were happy though
we didn't have much and nothing grand to show
The years have past and I did grow old
forever in my memory, the girl with the long hair of gold

Keeping those memories helps us retain that inner child. Very nicely done.
