King of My Heart

Topic: goodbyepoetry

Dear Mufasa,
I remember when you picked us out
I remember when you said to us, "Love me! Love me! Love me! Take me home with you tonight."
I remember when you first explored your new home
You jumped and missed and fell
You played with all your might
You were quite the talker, too
You had the mightiest roar!
You talked to us constantly, telling us stories
Telling us about your day
Complaining about whatever it is little kittens complain about
You would wake us up early in the morning by jumping on us
You would bat at our faces like it was your toy
And when we put the covers over our heads to hide, you would bite our noses through the comforter
You would meow and purr to try to get us up to play with you
And as soon as we gave in and got up to snuggle with you
You would crawl in close in between us and fall asleep, purring
You knew how much we loved you
We knew how much you loved us
You were such a fun little guy to be around
People who didn't like cats ended up falling in love with you
You always had the kindest heart
The gentlest touch
The softest fur
The cutest meow (My favorite was probably "Mur-row-uh-row!" your "hey, I missed you" meow)
When we were home, all you did was follow us around
If we sat down, you had to be in our laps
If we were busy, you took your toy and demanded our attention, doing ninja moves all over the living room
You gave us love bites on our fingers, you kissed us on our noses with your little tongue
You loved to roll over on your back and have us scratch your belly - sometimes I thought you were part dog
You would purr so loud I could feel the rumble in my chest when you were in my arms
And you had the cutest cat-foot in the world, reaching out as far as you could, spreading your toes as wide as possible
Bringing them back in curled up so tight and close to you, only to reach out as far as you could again

You chose us because you knew you could be happy with us
You chose us because you knew we would do everything in the world for you
You loved us so fierce I think my heart grew a couple sizes
You, Mufasa, are the King of my heart

But now, so young, we have to say goodbye
This is the hardest thing I'm going to ever have to do
But we need to do what's best for you
I wish that you still had the will to live
But I can't be selfish, I have to let you go
You're not eating, not drinking, it's hard for you to breathe now
You can't hardly walk...
I hate this disease that you have
Why, why did the sweetest living thing ever to have existed have to get this disease?
Why you?
WHY YOU?
I would trade places with you if I could
I really would
I would give my life for you
I have the tiniest comfort knowing that we have done all that we could
I never knew that this would feel right, to let you go
But I know it's time
You lived your life the best that you could, because I think that you knew you didn't have very long to live on this earth
I just wish that it wasn't you
I wish that we didn't have to say goodbye so early
You're just a kitten, just a little boy
But I know it's time and I know it's the right thing to do
This is the hardest, heart wrenching goodbye I've ever had to deal with
I love you
You will always be the king of my heart
King Mufasa
-- Your Mommy, Jess

The bond between a human and an animal is fascinating to me. I've had and lost many pets through the years and it is heartbreaking every time. My sympathies to you.

This is a very great write, and it reached out to my heart. I have a cat like yours, very lovable and special, it felt like you were speaking of him. His memory will be in your heart forever and the healing will come with time. I send you my very best wishes.

Brenda
