I had always thought that I knew you.
When I first found you,
Down by the river creek
You looked like nothing more
Than an innocent child,
Clad in a snow white dress of flowers.
You never spoke a word to me.
I thought that you were mute,
That something had happened to you
To make you so meek
To make you so docile
And nothing more than a scared little lamb.
Then I heard you sing.
The sound resembled that of a dove's coo,
So soft and gentle
But full of an aching passion,
A heart that wanted
To speak to the world.
Afterwords, you spoke your first words.
I had found you
Three days after my lover had died,
And a week after I had heard you sing
I was back to mourning,
Relating to the then and now.
They were comforting words.
As I had bemoaned that it was all my fault
You,
Who had happened to have been by the door
Spoke meekly,
"You cannot blame yourself if it was something you couldn't stop
To begin with."
Later on, I learned to love you.
You were quiet,
And you stayed mute
And you barely spoke another word,
Uttering almost nothing to me in return
During one-sided conversations.
But you were like a daughter to me.
You were the daughter I never had,
The offspring I had once wished to sire
With my now gone beloved.
Fragile and meek you were,
Gentle and sweet
You showed yourself to be.
That all changed, didn't it?
One night,
As I was searching for you in the woods
That you had escaped into
Late into the dark,
I saw you.
You were covered in blood.
Crimson colored you,
Scarlet roses
Blooming terribly
On top of your
Familiar snow white dress of flowers.
I was horrified.
How could this have happened?
A child
You were,
But ten grown men
Were lying at your feet,
Dead.
There was no weapon in sight.
You stared at me with eyes
I didn't recognize.
They were no longer wide with innocence,
But the narrowed eyes
Of those only an adult could possess.
You walked away.
You walked away from me,
Without a single word
To accompany your departure.
That hurt me
Inside.
The same way you never spoke a word to me the first time we met.
Down on the ground,
Next to the place
Where you feet once lay,
Was a bloody piece of paper
I didn't see before.
I couldn't believe what I read.
'She tried to kill you.'
-A
That was it.
It was one simple message,
With one simple letter.
The thing was,
I didn't understand.
Who was "A?"
Who tried to kill me?
Was it that child I had came to love?
...I didn't understand then,
And I still don't understand much now.
All I know is that you're gone,
And I'm never going to see you again.
