~*~

O Mother Durga, the daughter of the Mountain,
And the bliss of the earth, who rejoices in the play
Of Universe, who is praised by the joyous Nandi,
Who resides on the peak of Vindhyas, Who plays
With forms of Vishnu, who is praised by the lord of
The Heaven, who is the Consort of Lord Shiva, whose
Family is the Universe, and whose acts are glorious,
Be victorious, Be victorious,
O Slayer of Demon Mahishasur,
O Daughter of the Himalayan
With beautiful braided hair!
~*~
O Durga, who showers boons on gods,
Who punishes the evil minded demons.
Who enjoys the destruction of cruel demons,
Who looks after and feeds the three worlds,
Who pleases Shiva and who destroys all sins,
Who rejoices in the sounds of war drums,
Who quells the pride of powerful demons,
Who is also the Daughter of the Ocean,
Be victorious, Be victorious,
O Slayer of Demon Mahishasur,
O Daughter of the Himalayan
With beautiful braided hair!
~*~
O Mother of the Universe,O my mother,
Who loves to live in the forest of Kadambas
Who is always blissful, who dwells on the peaks
Of lofty Himalayans, who is sweeter than honey,
Who destroys the delusions of love and hatred,
Who enjoys dancing when she slays demons,
Be victorious, Be victorious,
O Slayer of Demon Mahishasur,
O Daughter of the Himalayan
With beautiful braided hair!
~*~
O Goddess, who broke the heads of cruel demons,
Into hundreds of pieces, Who cut them into thousands
Of atoms, who rides on a valorous lion of knowledge
Which tears the temples of the elephants, and
The generals of Mahisha into thousands of pieces,
Be victorious, Be victorious,
O Slayer of Demon Mahishasur,
O Daughter of the Himalayan
With beautiful braided hair!
~*~
O Mother, who created myriads of blazing energies
To conquer the enemies of gods in the battle field,
Who tactfully sent the Lord of hosts as a messenger
To the demons to take a decision to destroy them,
Be victorious, Be victorious,
O Slayer of Demon Mahishasur,
O Daughter of the Himalayan
With beautiful braided hair!
~*~
O Mother of the world, who protects and grants boons
To the wives of heroic enemies when they seek refuge
At Your lotus feet, and who is armed with a blazing trident
To smash the heads of those who cause pain to the worlds,
O Goddess, who shines likes the fierce midday Sun, and
Who is roused by the sounds of 'Dhum, Dhum,Dhum'
Produced by the beating of the drums of gods,
Be victorious, Be victorious,
O Slayer of Demon Mahishasur,
O Daughter of the Himalayan
With beautiful braided hair!
~*~
O Goddess, who blew away hundreds of demons
Whose eyes emitted poisonous smoke of ignorance,
Just by uttering the magical sound of 'Hum' mantra;
O Mother, who appeared like a blood red creeper,
Emanated from the seeds of blood which fell on
The ground, and who sacrificed the demons Shumbha
And Nishumbha, in the battle field to Great God Shiva!
Be victorious! Be victorious,
O Slayer of demon Mahishasur,
O Daughter of the Himalayan
With beautiful braided hair!
~*~
O Goddess, who is the most skilled player at war,
To whom the battlefield is a stage for Her graceful dance,
Who received all the golden, brown arrows of the enemies
As garlands of flowers and whose shining bow and arrows
Made swift and rhythmic movements creating the music,
Whose lovely limbs throbbed with glittering ornaments,
Whose anklets made sweetest jingling music while
She moved her dancing feet, and who smashed all
The fourfold armies of demons by Her arrows playfully!
Be victorious! Be victorious,
O Slayer of demon Mahishasur,
O Daughter of the Himalayan
With beautiful braided hair!
~*~
O Mother, whose victory is sung by the whole Universe,
And the angels who showered flowers did sing and dance,
O Goddess, who attracts the attention of Lord Shiva, by
The tingling sounds of Thy anklets while You are dancing,
And who is delighted by the dances of the celestial dancers!
Be victorious! Be victorious,
O Slayer of demon Mahishasur,
O Daughter of the Himalayan
With beautiful braided hair!
~*~
O Goddess,who is enchantingly beautiful
Who is gracious and auspicious to good people,
Who shines with full Moon like face that lights up
The path of those who are walking in darkness,
O Goddess, who is blissful like the Moon at night,
Whose eyes are honeyed flowers to attract the bees,
Whose face is a sweet lotus to attract the bee like Shiva
And who dazzles all the worlds with Her magical powers!
Be victorious! Be victorious,
O Slayer of demon Mahishasur,
O Daughter of the Himalayan
With beautiful braided hair!
~*~
O Goddess, who fought with many powerful wrestlers
In the sport of battle and wiped out them with a mere
Lift of Her eye brows, who dwells among flowery bowers
And fragrant creepers of pepper, jasmines and madhavis,
Who moves like a Swan among lotus beds and Lilly plants
And who is as pretty as a full blown lotus-flower at sunrise!
Be victorious! Be victorious,
O Slayer of demon Mahishasur,
O Daughter of the Himalayan
With beautiful braided hair!
~*~
O Great Queen, who has troupes of rutty elephants
With copious flows of ichor to trounce the enemies,
In battle field, who is the daughter of the milk-ocean,
From where the beautiful moon has taken his birth,
O Goddess who is worshiped by the God of love
Who fills the minds of pretty ladies with desire!
Be victorious! Be victorious,
O Slayer of demon Mahishasur,
O Daughter of the Himalayan
With beautiful braided hair!
~*~
O Devi, whose forehead shines like the half moon
Spreading cool rays of pure and white lotus petals;
O Mother, who sports like a white swan in the lakes
Of the hearts of devotees as an epitome of fine arts,
Whose coiffure is swarmed by humming black bees,
As if they are crowded on the beds of blue lotuses,
Be victorious! Be victorious!
O Slayer of demon Mahishasur,
O Daughter of the Himalayan
With beautiful braided hair!
~*~
O Goddess with sweet tender thoughts,
Whose enchanting lute music puts the sweet,
Voiced nightingales to shame, who dwells
In the mountain groves, pleasant and beautiful
Resounding with the voices of the tribal folk;
Whose meadows are filled with tribal maidens
Sweetly singing and beautifully dancing,
Be victorious! Be victorious,
O Slayer of demon Mahishasur,
O Daughter of the Himalayan
With beautiful braided hair!
~*~
O Goddess, who wears lustrous yellow
Silks on Her waist which put the moon to shame,
Whose toe nails shine like the moon with reflection
Of the light from the jeweled crowns of gods
And goddesses who bow at Her red lotus feet;
O Goddess, whose lofty breasts shine like
The peaks of heavenly golden mountains,
Be victorious! Be victorious,
O Slayer of demon Mahishasur,
O Daughter of the Himalayan
With beautiful braided hair!
~*~
O Mother, who is as refulgent as thousand
Nectarine Moons, whose splendor defeats
The thousand rayed Sun, who was praised
By demon Tharaka after his defeat in the hands
Of Her son; who is attended by Her sons Ganesha
And Kumara, the lords of the sky and divine forces
And who dwells in the mind-lotus of Lord Shiva,
Be victorious! Be victorious,
O Slayer of demon Mahishasur,
O Daughter of the Himalayan
With beautiful braided hair!
~*~
O Goddess Durga, whose lotus like tender feet are
The veritable storehouse of mercy and perennial source
Of divine wealth and prosperity; what desire is there
That can not be achieved by falling at Your lotus feet?
O Mother, who exists in my heart-lotus, what is there
That I will not get if I take refuge at Your lotus feet?
Be pleased to grant me devotion and concentration
So that, I will meditate everyday on Your lotus feet,
Be victorious! Be victorious,
O Slayer of demon Mahishasur,
O Daughter of the Himalayan
With beautiful braided hair!
~*~
O Mother Divine, who ever sprinkles pure water,
Mixed with honey of devotion taken in a golden pot
On Your golden person in the temple of His heart,
O Devi, he will get same pleasure like Indra in heaven
When he embraces his high breasted queen Indrani,
Hence I take refuge in Thy lotus feet which can unite
Me with Shiva, the great lord of bliss-consciousness,
Be victorious! Be victorious,
O Slayer of demon Mahishasur,
O Daughter of the Himalayan
With beautiful braided hair!
~*~
May You shower some mercy on us weak souls,
With just a fleeting glance of Your merciful eyes,
You are the most merciful Mother of the universe
As You are the ocean of compassion, be pleased
To grant me liberation from the misery of the world
And do not reject my prayer even if it is improper,
But be pleased to drive away all my sorrows,
Be victorious! Be victorious,
O Slayer of demon Mahishasur,
O Daughter of the Himalayan
With beautiful braided hair!

- The End -

Powerful rendering of classic prayer! Also reminded of Sri Aurobindo's patriotic Hymn to Durga! _ /|_
