The way we were

Contributed by wrybod on Friday, 9th May 2003 @ 09:05:00 PM in AEST
Topic: LostLove

A ghost lives in my memory
a wraith of years long gone
a time of youth and happy days
when he and she were one.

He, a fighter pilot
returning from the war.
She, a senior schoolgirl
he soon came to adore.

Now and then he drifts away
(although it gives me pain)
to stroll once more down memory lane
and be with her again.

Three years of blissfull memories.
A time when life stood still.
A time when he was studying
a new role to fulfill.

Without resposibilities
they lived their days "on high"
drank life's gift of pleasure
'till the well ran dry.

True, they had a row once
and went their separate ways!
An agony of loneliness
that lasted two whole days.

Holidays together.
Fantastic crowd of friends.
Seemed to last forever
always "happy ends"

Part 2

But Time, the thief of youth
.... had yet to send his bill,
they were growing older
while their love stood still

The 'schoolgirl' now aged twenty one
amongst men every day
found she liked their 'compliments'
and 'going out to play'

The 'pilot' now aged twenty six
(long gone, the rank and glitter)
working as a sales rep'
feeling sad and bitter.

His visits 'came less frequent
it seemed that nothing mattered
at last they faced reality
their tinted glasses shattered

A stormy row, a ring flung down
two years of wilderness.
They met again just once or twice
but never could redress.

Part 3

And then on holiday I met
the one who changed my life.
Fifty long years married now
I found the perfect wife.

But faded distant images
of blissfull times long gone
stll linger deep inside my head
and so the ghost lives on.

Then I heard misfortune
came to 'my schoolgirls' life.
A 'shotgun wedding'...family rift!
No start for a young wife.

Still...he stays to haunt me
the truth he cannot bear
still believes somewhere, somehow......
They'll find......the way they were.

You write so well, Wrybod. This is like a confession of a matter left unresolved. Perhaps if you had married your ghost, it would have truly died and there would be no more ghosts, but young romance is fun to remember. Bizzy

Bizzy,.... the "Ghost" is only memories that will not die and not part of the real world.

My "schoolgirl" may well still be alive
and be a contented Grandma in the real world.

However she may have a ghost too............

My touble is I try to reply to all comments (not many do) so the list gets long and I have trouble keeping track.

a little tear alights my eye
for days gone past astray
you write of it so eloquentely
you touched me on this day...

i know you found your true love
a wonderful woman fair
but reminensing once in a awhile
reminds you of the dare

of life that once was
and things from afar
it's best to leave it there
to remember them the way they were

It's just a ghost that haunts me
a tender memory
just a touch of sadness
to sharpen reverie

Thank you. Does the soul control the mind or is it the other way about?

The first poem I ever did at school that ever got a mark was a bloodcurdling thing about being a fighter pilot and shooting down an enemy plane. I only did it because our English teacher was a concientious objector
and had not enlisted. Much to my amazement he gave me an A. That was over 60 years ago and I've been writing (off and on) ever since

ah to be young again and know what we know now!!! LOL I really love this one, I suppose most of us have that 'certain smeone' from our youth, the one who got away and we romanticize the legends of our youth in memories. Bravo!
