My Final Flight

need to feel the wind tonight
gave up on the stars, though they shine so bright
feeling the depth of winter's last bite
preparing for flight
all my desires, bled deep and swallowed
every dream dead, just like always
at the end of this journey
lies everything i've ever needed
driving to my runway
my body hums with anticipation
cut myself tonight, for strength
the scars would be beautiful
but, i guess i'll never know
at my runway, the cliff
winter kisses my face with her ice
and i smile at the dying world below
they'll never know what they've lost
ready to fly
arms stretched wide, as if i expected to soar
my grin turns to laughter
though my tears still fall
i'm right behind them
learning to fly
falling so fast
my mind is a blank
if only i could have known such clarity before
i wouldn't have to fly away
embracing the fall
the gulls and stars, sole witnesses
to my triumph
my target grows near
my landing looms like the open maw of hell
denying my wings
all sorrow left at the cliff's ledge
with identification and a note with no words
all regret blown away
by the sigh of mourning winter
as another of her children gives himself over
to the deeper darkness
the endless cold
the final freeze
seconds before impact
the sea opens beneath me
and i sink to unprobed depths
swallowed by the cleanser of tears
the sea closes once more
and i am no more
this boundless tomb
hurls my moon-thrown shadow back to land
it bursts into a murder of ravens
who flap madly towards unreachable horizons
like blood stains on the moon
their wings scar the unblinking eye of night
and i am at peace
the gulls still fly
the stars still shine
my witnesses, unmoved by my fearless flight,
move on as though it were all a dream
and i have flown to an aborted tomorrow
