The Pier

I stood at the pier tonight
Whilst orange and white
Drunken lights straggled and danced
Across the flowing black silence deep.
The wind brought rain and the tinge
Of seaside smell, bittersweet.
Still the tide ebbs.
And the time we spent
And the memories I rent
Seemed but a handful of sand
Slipping through clenched fingers,
Unstoppable,
Returned to the vastness, infiniteness,
Swallowed by the sea.
