Once When I Was Young
Once when I was young
And full of words
I could take wing above
The grass
And find the underneath
Of leaves
I could sing the sky
Into the earth
Dance upon the grave
Of love
And court eternity
Now when I am old
And full of rivers run
I find their whirlings are gone
They have forgotten
My eyes that loved their banks
They ignore
My war, my loss,
My youth that scorned
Their flowing and structured grace
To say,
‘Old man, sleep,
Dream on in your last
Longing words of poetry’

Love this wonderful piece of poetry, can warm my hands on the heart running through this, the lines are ,beautifully expressed, and so much emotion and feeling increased by nostalgia, a well trodden path through life, but most of all the glow of connection from depth of sensitivity and great writing . |
