Blessed is the Rat of Brooklyn

Blessed is the rat of Brooklyn
who knows more about corporal punishment
than the men who sit, cross-eyed,
in the metal chair of death.
No, not of death,
but of worms and dirt and mud
and the backstreet garbage.
Blessed is the house-fly of Africa
who has no house at all,
just a poor homeless fellow
trying to feed his two autistic daughters
and survive his lifespan of your
hourly trip to the toilet.
To the raccoon sister of Calgary
who has to share a room with her four brothers,
and sometimes – a bed with her father.
Who has never raised her voice
but keeps a diary of ways
to kill them all.
To the carrier pigeon who ***** up
and sent the valentine
to the wrong girl.
Who is now chained to a bicycle rack
and asks for spare change
and a ticket to Bermuda.
And, finally, the deer tick of Wisconsin
who injects in halfway houses
just to feel any emotion at all,
who walks five miles to school
to learn the letter F
and spends three days a week
drinking moxie
through the sewer pipes.
Who swaps needles at the drive-ins
with Cindy Lou Who
and trades hospital bills
with the three blind mice.
Who stabbed a man in seventh grade
and killed a girl in eighth.
Who vacations at the bottom of your shower drain
and is accidently thrown away
with the clumps of hair and blood and skin.
Who watched his father die and
heard his mother cheat,
who burnt a hole through his arm
the day the vans came,
the day the dirt spoke,
the day the city was swallowed whole by the garbage truck.
Who will wither into eternity
on the cold cement,
right there – next to your pile of toenail clippings.

Blessed also is the poet who would see them. |
