The gooseberry that bit back

By an orchard of plenty, a paradise found,
there's song in the treetops and guile on the ground.
As a chaffinch composes his summer refrain
three urchins are plotting skulduggery again.

There's apples and goosegogs and pears in their prime
so they're thinking that sampling is surely no crime;
they've been here before so they know how it lies,
move stealthy, keep hidden from furious eyes.

They sneak on their bellies, they know all the tricks,
they've seen John Wayne war movies down at the flicks.
Two by the gooseberries, one up the tree
leaping the boughs like a demented flea.

Full pockets of goosegogs and apples galore
when the watchman appears and lets out a roar;
screaming blue murder and threatening harm.
Scares the gooseberry sneak-thiefs into alarm.

Over the hedgerows to freedom they flee
leaving their number three high on a tree.
He's quiet and still, just waiting for death
and mumbling 'Hail Marys' under his breath.

The bogeyman growls, not knowing there's three;
looks up, but doesn't see Fear in the tree.
He returns to his den as his animus wanes
and the tree urchin's off with his ill-gotten gains.

''What an adventure and what an escape!''
agreed the three scallywags after their scrape.
But unknown to them, their victory feast
would grip their digestion and groan for release.

Mischief and mayhem on National Laughter Day that's what I like to read and oh the consequences!!!Humour is such a difficult genre of poetry to nail so I am lead to conclude that that wicked scottish twinkle I see in this bard is the reason for Tommy's inimitable ability to bring the warmth and the smiles so perfectly to the page xx

Sorry, I don't have much of a comment because I don't really know how to type out the actual sound of my laughter!!!!

But I do have this cool little emoticon for when I do bust out laughing!!!

Was drawn to this by the title, and I wasn't disappointed. Haven't heard gooseberries reffered to as goosegogs since I was a kid.
Ah, the old scrumping days, those we're the days. Thanks for a great read, and tweek of the memory.
