'Us Undeserving Poor'
The apathy the silence
the stillness of early mornings
in a world of peeling wallpaper
and old women dawdling
Morning stirs our floundering soul
our bodies hunched awkwardly out in the cold
awaiting some lumbering bus's arrival
another day in the life of this tedious cycle
eventually it meandres sluggishly into view
full of spawled feet
and tatty trainers
tired old men and
paint splattered labourers
the stern inscrutable
fussy old hags
impatiently tutting
and rummaging through bags
Am I just one of the cold stares
from the steamy window panes
Questioning, intruding
ultimately dissaproving
Were all anchored in this town of lost content
and the little we have got were inclined to accept
because theres so little to strive for, so little to expect
all those ruined faces
that look so prematurely old
the embarrassment and despair
in the queue for the dole
the paleness of your mothers face
when those brown letters arrive
and the paralysing sense of hopelessness
that so cruely derives
from scarcely earning enough money to survive
look at all those loutish loitering snarling young men
resented by society for
waddling aimlessly through their years
ridiculed by society for
the wilderness between their ears
slammed for the anti-social consequences
of getting wrecked on drugs and beer
that they take like a medicine
to escape the emptiness the pain the fear
of the deprivation and poverty
thats been contaminating them for years
because its deprivation its poverty thats reduced them
to be these loutish loitering snarling young men
and if ever the affluent bigots tell you anything to the contrary
feel free to deliver a few socks to their jaw
our circumstances havnt encouraged us to be rational
so we'll behave how were expected to behave, 'us undeserving poor'
the bus continues to take me to that place
where i earn my pittance for survival
its just another day in the life
of this tedious cycle
journeying past all the boarded up buildings
the barbed wire fencing
the shabby council flats
the teenage menacing
the anguished mothers
and their babies crying
the stolen bottles of ale
and the haggered men fighting
'thank you much love, terry tibbs talk to me'

Hi,
Fascinated by this poem. Your observations
were very precise and probably indicative of
many towns and cities here in the UK, and
elsewhere. With reference to the angry
young men - the people responsible for their
deprivation, through bad management or bad
government, (or ''criminal'' indifference) are
never the objects of their fury. We often
hear the phrase ''Must get to the root of
this deprivation.'' The problem does not begin
at the root - the angry young are the root -
the problem lies with those who bloom and
flourish at the top, which is as unbalanced
and unnatural and illusionary as flowerheads
that bloom while their roots rot. In the world
of Nature, only Man could create this
deception.
Well written, my friend.
