MATES

There are many things that mattered, as I’ve strode the path of life
The first goal kicked, the wedding day, my own child’s cry, my special wife
But up amongst the highlights, of nigh on sixty years
Have been the friends who’ve come and gone, or simply shared a beer.
For nothings quite so precious, as a friend when the need is great
Who simply cares about you, just because you are a mate.
Who’s always standing at your door, the moment they hear your call
To give whatever’s asked, ready to give their all.
I’ve friends I’ve known for many years, that I never could replace
And friendships newly kindled, that ever smiling face
There are those who passed quite quickly, through the years my life has run
But left me better off for knowing, each and every one.
Now that the years are passing and my hair is turning grey
And one reflects on what one’s done to pass the time each day
I count my lucky stars each night, for the hand that I received
Those paths I’ve crossed, that played a part, in all that I’ve achieved.

Hi,
A fine tribute to those who make life bearable
and worth bearing.
