what's this? what have i found?
a single lost glove lies before me on the ground
but who from? and where are they now?
i wish to find its former, get it back to them somehow
i pluck the item from the grass, and examine with due care
i wonder of the owner, and if that's her over there
i deduce it was a lady's once, for it's made of silk and lace
a beauty who no longer sits at the bench that i now face
i decide that i should stay and wait, because this is where she sat
i hope the lady feels not sad, and may come to where i'm at
after a time i do grow weary, i become tired of this bit
but i stay and remain vigilant, for i do not mean to quit
as i sit and wait, in the back of my mind a thought does creep
it's one that bothers, one that worries, one that frightens me deep
what if it's not the glove that is lost, but is actually the lady in trouble
then i shall stand and find this damsel, and i shall rescue her on the double
i searched through the day, and half of the night, i looked most everywhere
i did what i could, i did as i might, but i could never mate the pair
so i'm back at the bench and my heart goes out, to the lady who lost her glove
i bet you thought this story would end with the lady and i in love...
