For My Sake

Contributed by dvtpdw on Friday, 9th March 2012 @ 12:07:47 PM in AEST
Topic: anguished

I've been on this earth for many years
Life has ebbed through smiles and tears
Keep promising myself each morning I awake
I'll keep trying to forget, for my sake

It always seemed like a fairy tale over told
That memories would fade as you grow old
I could never envision how that could be
Now I understand as the years fold in on me

The wonderful memories I fight to retain
Are falling from my mind like silver rain
Unable to hold the joyous sound of yesterday
Colorful pictures of happiness slipping away

Please explain why I seem to hang on to
Memories of the hurt and pain caused by you
Try as I might, and believe me I'm trying so bad
I can't get them to die, can't get rid of the sad

Well meaning words from others being said
I hear their echo bouncing in my head
Let go, forget, no worth to remembering
Hard to understand the pain is heart rending

It hovers there, just out of my line of sight
Cuts through my soul, blocks out the light
This what you caused, yet never acknowledge
Upends my world, pushes me near the edge

For my sake, I'm willing to learn a new trick
To beat those bad memories back with a stick
Forever lock them up within a dark giant box
Toss them into time's sea weighted with rocks

Once I manage the courage to perform this feat
There'll be room for my memories so sweet
Good ones filled with all the wonder and hope
I'll hold them close and expand their scope
