The age of Reason?

Contributed by spud on Friday, 9th March 2012 @ 02:12:04 AM in AEST
Topic: Lifepoems

****

Now I'm not one to criticize or denigrate the youth;
there was a time when I was one - and isn't that the truth.
In the liberating sixties, wearing painful drainpipe trews
and tapered boots as sharp as spears on socks that sang the blues.

Music was the life-force on every youthful breath
telling us that 'status quo' meant stagnancy and death.
'The times they are a changin' chanted Dylan - right on cue.
Though I don't recall him telling us what they'd be changing to.

We railed against and reprimanded unsuspecting mothers,
scathing fathers, domestication, and even one another.
Rejection and rebellion dragooned their halcyon rut
and strongly favoured Rule and Power should wear a Beatles cut.

With quietude and fortitude my parents found the cure ....
''Now son, we love you more than life, of that you can be sure.
You're free to go, find a job, pay all your contributions,
so seize the day whilst having all the answers and solutions!''

****

I can always rely on Tommy to make me smile! And this one certainly hasn't taken you off that laureate pedastal I put you on when I first read your poetry x

I must applaud you on always finding the ironies in life.
You've done it again here, made me laugh and nod in realisation that it's the truth
Well done.

Steve

And then, someday our kids will have kids.

I think some things have changed. Some for the worse, some for the better. Some remain the same but one thing for sure, you're right. What goes around comes around. I swear I have seen myself walking around in today's youth. Not sure if I have become my dad as he died way too young but I definitely see some of my mom in me.

Not sure if that's what you were going for but that's what I got out of it.

Take care,

Tim

Hi Tommy,

I love the rhyme. I love the meter & the beat to your proverbial drum. You never disappoint when I get a chance to visit your verse.

I hope, for our age, we have wisdom & we have some fun. Everything good for you!!

Smiles~ elle

Well my dear, Scottish bloke. This... this was just wonderful.
Slightly nostalgic but with that teeniest hint of comedic sarcasm
I love.( the last verse is brilliant, dear poet). I've definitely missed
you and your wonderful poetry. I hope to be reading more soon.

You are the incredible thinking man's poet. ;)

More please. ^_^
