Goodbye for 60 years

Contributed by scottstone on Tuesday, 6th March 2012 @ 02:25:27 AM in AEST
Topic: AmericanTragedy

Today the stars shined a little less brighter
And the world grew so much quieter
No more to see the smile that now sleeps beneath the earth
Why do the good die young?

As I let go
Twenty years was just enough
To break my heart to pieces
As we clung to every word the doctor said

It’s ok, It’s ok, It’s ok
You were loved for every moment you were here
Go with God in peace
And though all our plans are drowned beneath our tears
It’s not the end, it’s goodbye for 60 years

Yet still as I grow older
Even when the hair that’s on my head moves to my shoulders
I’ll still think of you and pray
You’re the life we hold so dear
It’s not The End, it’s goodbye for 60 years

And I hope I live until I’m 80
I want to find that wife who will let me have 10 babies
And all the things our parents dreamed of
When we were young and loved and a tad bit reckless

And when the doctor looks at me and hangs his head
When I’m dying in my bed
Take hold of my soul and lead me on
When we’re home at last and God can laugh at all of my stupid jokes
And all of my big mistakes

You’re still my dearest friend
And my journey isn’t over
The time will come when I will shed no tears
We’ll have so much to say in 60 years

Wow, this is the first poem I've read in awhile that gave me goosebumps. I could feel the pain of loss, and the hope for reunion. Your words pulled me in and tug my heart along for the ride. Great, great write. Thanks.
