THE SKINNY IN YOU

The whole world is insensitive
To those of us who are fat.
I don’t just mean over weight,
I'll be truthful about that.

We aren't like the stereotypes
Who adorn all magazines.
Or the bratty new starlets
Plastered on our t.v. screens.

We would like to be treated
Like the rest of all mankind.
As people who have feelings,
And also have keen minds.

We don't wish to be pitied,
Or be drawn as harsh cartoons.
We hate when it gets silent
The moment we enter any room.

We don't always need reminded
Of the size of our plump waist.
So please don't be cruel for once
By always speaking in such haste.

Prejudice today comes in many forms.
We are more sensitive than what is the norm.
We would come running if you ever needed help
Just a little less swiftly than maybe yourself.

I found some humor in the last line. Indeed, the central message is factual--society is flawed by prejudice. A lovely poem,
