FASCINATION

Photobucket

A seemingly lower form of life
On any evolutionary scale.
But they communicate with their light,
Their heads, their wings, and tails.

Winged beetles called fireflies
Or lightning bugs I’ve read
Produce a cold form of light,
Which may be yellow, green or red.

Even their larvae emit some light
And are called glow worms for their essence
Of a light and chemical production process
Called bioluminescence.

Their light is a signal to predators,
That they’d better stay away.
Because the light producing chemicals are
Distasteful and toxic and could ruin their day.

There is a spontaneous order to their flashes,
Especially in a very large group.
It’s called phase synchronization,
A phenomenon keeping them in the loop.

It teaches them of elevation
And direction when on the move.
It tells of when a banquet’s ahead,
Of snails, or grubs, as food.

There are over 2,000 species
Of lightning bug fireflies.
The most dangerous ones are Photuris,
“Femme Fatale’s” do I need explain why?

Great writing. I suppose the ones we use to catch let go in the house were safe.
Smiles,

The title is exactly what I felt as a child trying to capture lightning bugs. I especially like how you were so factual in such a flowing format.

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
